Happy International Hobbit Day 2026. Yes, September 22nd marks the birthdays of hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, the fictional protagonists in J.R.R. Tolkien‘s landmark fantasy stories.
The American Tolkien Society formalized Hobbit Day and Tolkien Week back in 1978. So if you think everyone and everything having a commemoration date is a recent phenomenon, think again.
How to celebrate
Suggestions for celebrating Hobbit Day include:
- eat seven meals including breakfast, second breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and supper. Baking any sort of bread, wrapping it in giant leaves and calling it Lembas is allowed.
- dress in comfortable faux-English-rustic-Edwardian costume. Do not forget your cloak.
- go barefoot for the day. You may want to glue some additional hair to your feet to get the full experience.
- climb an active volcano and throw random jewelry into it. On second thoughts, don’t do that.
Or you could just host a Middle Earth movie Watch Party, a Tolkien reading marathon, or cosplay a hobbit birthday party.
