Sci-fi-fantasy classics: C.J. Cherry

Sci-fi-fantasy classics: C.J. Cherryh. This author has a vast back catalogue of award winning novels spanning hard science fiction, space opera, fantasy and hybrid genres.

C.J. Cherryh set the standard for female protagonists at a time when sci-fi and fantasy changed direction entering the 1980’s. Here’s a small selection of her works – my choices and not always her most renowned titles.

Downbelow Station: 1981

A Hugo Award-winning military science fiction novel set in the flashpoint of the Alliance, the Union, and warring Corporations.  The novel explores themes of survival, loyalty, and the political evolution of humanity as a space-born species detached from Earth.

Cyteen: 1988

Another Hugo Award-winning space opera set in Cherryh’s Alliance-Union universe. Ariane Emory, the brilliant, ruthless leader of the Reseune cloning facility is murdered among political intrigue. Cherryh explores nature versus. nurture, and the ethics of cloning. Can a clone ever be a true re-incarnation of the original person.

Morgaine: 1979 to 88

This four-book science-fantasy series follows Morgaine, a mysterious agent traversing worlds via the ancient, gates of a fallen  alien civilization. She has to seal these portals to prevent time-paradoxes. Action takes second place to the emotional journey of the protagonists, exploring themes of loyalty, honor, and sacrifice.

The Paladin: 1988

A standalone, alternative history without magic. Mulan-style peasant heroine Taizu, seeks vengeance for her family. She persuades the exiled sword-master, Shoka, to train her in order to overthrow a corrupt regent and restore the empire. Taizu is an ordinary girl with extraordinary drive and determination who puts contemporary YA heroines in the shade.
